David’s Extras

One of the servants said to Saul, “One of Jesse’s sons from Bethlehem is a talented harp player. Not only that—he is a brave warrior, a man of war, and has good judgment. He is also a fine-looking young man, and the Lord is with him.”
1 Samuel 16:18 NLT

My gosh! See C.V. David had
– skill
– track record
– private wins
– character
– outward presentation (let’s call all of these “A”)
.
.
.
…and a relationship with God (let’s call this “B”)

A is the part he worked on. In obedience to the earthly authorities placed over him, he submitted himself to the process of preparation. Dedication. Thoroughness. Not slacking. He put in the work and delivered results, not minding the obscurity or the “small scale/stage”. And it spoke for him. “A” is what he had, that gave him an edge over all the other people who could also play the harp, others who could meet the same need.

“A” is what got him recommended…
But “B” is what landed him the spot as an intimate member of Saul’s cabinet without external campaign, beyond the job he was recommended for.

Scriptures say “Saul liked him”. Liked him so much that he (the king) took permission from David’s father to keep David for himself. If Saul was asked why, he had no logical reason, because it was the presence of God with David that sealed the deal.

Scriptures say “…and the Lord is with him”

Get everything right, do your bit, tick all the boxes, but above all, stay with God (where He put you), and grow your relationship with Him. He is the “it” factor
